Inlays and Onlays

inlays and onlaysInlays and onlays are indirect fillings made of porcelain that fit into & on the tooth. Inlays and Onlays are used to make the tooth stronger by holding it together, as a natural & esthetically desirable color These fillings are similar to regular fillings (composite fillings), except that they’re firmly cemented by the dentist and are made in the dental laboratory as opposed to being moulded in the shape of the mouth.

Inlays and onlays are used in cases where there is inadequate tooth structure to support a filling but the tooth doesn’t require a crown.

Definition: A dental bonding is a tooth restorative material used to restore function, integrity & shape of the missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically due to decay, external trauma or is it lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the esthetics or the physical integrity of the proposed filling material. Tooth preparation is usually required before placing a dental restoration. This process involves cutting the tooth with a dental drill is usually to make room for the planned restoration, no tooth decay or structurally unsound tooth. If permanent restoration can not be performed after the preparation, temporary restoration is done. Inlay and Onlays in dentistry: an inlay is an indirect restoration (filling), consisting of a solid substance (as gold or porcelain) fitted in a cavity in a tooth and cemented into place. Onlays: An onlay is like a hollow, except that it stretches to replace a cusp. Crowns Onlays completely covers all surfaces of a tooth.

Inlays and Onlays Overview

Inlays and onlays are used in cases where there is a shortage of tooth structure to support a filling but the tooth doesn’t need a crown.

Used to repair damaged teeth, made from an impression of a cast of your bite and then baked in the laboratory, this gives a very strong repair of porcelain that fits into & onto the affected tooth. The purpose is to make the tooth stronger by holding together, while maintaining a natural and esthetically pleasing color.

Procedures

These fillings have 2 different forms:

Inlays: These fit into the space left after an old filling or cavity has been removed.

Onlays (partial crowns): Onlays sit on the tooth and build up the shape of the tooth.

Inlays and Onlays work requires 2-3 visits to the dentist. On the first visit the dentist will remove the decay of an old filling or cavity and a bite impression will be taken and place a temporary filling. On second visit the temporary filling will be removed and the indirect filling will be fitted.
